REFLECTIONS: Responding to the COVID-19 Crisis through Art

Dear Friends,

The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” - Aristotle

Though times like these strike chords of fear, isolation, and uncertainty in many of us, we can take this time to reflect upon the effect this global crisis has on our inner landscapes. Are we re-prioritizing? Do we have a new appreciation for our busy lifestyles and our craft? Or, perhaps, this unexpected halt in the mechanism of “every day” has made some of us realize that neither happiness nor fulfillment is being found through work. Whatever the silent musings, questions or conclusions may be, what is key here is reflection, because it is through earnest reflection that we can become better versions of ourselves. This is essentially the same process that art inspires us to traverse or that is manifested in different ways for each of its spectators and participants.

Through art we reflect.

Through art we grow.

Through art we learn.

Through art we recognize familiar faces among us.

In the very fibers that make up the connective tissue bonding all of us with one another is ART.

Although we may be physically disconnected for now, let us remember and evoke the sense of community that art bestows on us, and this will sustain us.

Let art inspire our own self reflections. Whatever your preferred medium may be, engage in it. Draw, paint, photograph, write a poem, play an instrument, sing, compose a song, listen to a new composition, watch a favorite or new dance piece online, discover the works of a new painter, read that book you have been saving. Art is everywhere, and has endless forms, let it guide and encourage you in this uncertain time.

With our love and respect,

Claire & Alejandro
